Hurricane Charley
pictures of cape haze florida
The next morning, I got up early to get some pictures for my photo column
in the Englewood Review.
I didn't have to travel far to find the destruction... as there were
13 trees down in the first 1/4 from my house.
Pictures of Gulf Cove, Florida
I thought for sure there would be some interesting pictures in Englewood,
or out on Englewood Beach... but the further north I traveled,
the less it seemed that there was even a storm, so I circled back towards
Gulf Cove.
These photo's were taken at the marina/boat storage place at the intersection
of 771 and Appleton, where it
appears the wind started a chain reaction of the boats in dry dock
falling off their stands.
Pictures of Boca Grande, Florida
It seemed to me, that the further south I went, the more destruction
I found,
so I decided to head out to the island of Boca Grande. The police
were in charge of the
toll booth at the draw bridge, but my PRESS credentials got me past
the checkpoint
that was only allowing residents to go out onto the island.
I didn't have to drive very far to start seeing the aftermath of hurricane
Charley.
Trees down... buildings torn apart... the main road looked more like
a country trail
than a highway in many places. As I approached the town of Boca
Grande...
I suddenly realized how lucky I was that the storm turned east when
it did... as the
devastation became more and more apparent with every mile I traveled.
These pictures are of one of my favorite photography locations.
A landmark place called Banyan Street,
where the huge banyan trees always supplied a shady, quiet and beautifully
unique location for me
to take pictures of children and adults among the roots and limbs of
the giant Banyan trees that lined
both sides of the street. I must admit that it was
a bit depressing to take these next pictures.
Beautiful, historic, Banyan Street was no longer passable... and this
stop sign at the corner
was the only clue that there was ever a roadway present.
Some of these giant Banyan trees, that were always so friendly and photogenic,
had their massive roots ripped from the ground by the category 4 hurricane
force winds...
while others just had their branches ripped to shreds. I
decided to take one last self portrait
before they come and cut these trees up.
